NATCON24 Recap: Blues Music and AI

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the National Council on Mental Health and Wellness conference otherwise known as NATCON, an event that showcased the transformative power of technology in healthcare. As a clinical psychologist deeply invested in the intersection of human expertise and AI technology, this conference was an enlightening experience that left me both inspired and hopeful for the future of mental health care. However, it could have also just been the puppy petting station or the free massages!

In addition to the key takeaways I share below, my experience included connecting with current customers and partners to discuss challenges, successes, and the future of our industry. I also made new colleagues, friends, and collaborators. I took part in numerous social events that highlighted the compassion and dedication of our workforce. I even had the opportunity to appreciate the iconic St. Louis Blues music, which was a delightful surprise for me!

Key Takeaways

AI was the newcomer! While there had been inklings of data analytics and Artificial Intelligence in past conferences, this year it was front and center. There were 3 AI solutions that stood out to me as topics of the conference that are likely to advance the use of technology in community-based settings and revolutionize patient care.

  1. AI in the EHR: Particularly intriguing was the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Traditionally, EHRs have been static repositories of patient information, requiring manual updates and often leading to inefficiencies in healthcare delivery. However, the adoption of AI in EHR systems promises to automate and streamline these processes, enabling more personalized and efficient care like Kipu and TherapyBrands that shared how they see AI playing a role in “tomorrow’s EHR.”
  2. AI for note-taking: AI-powered documentation and note-taking solutions also emerged as a hot topic, offering a glimpse into a future where clinicians can spend less time on administrative tasks and more time focusing on patient care. These AI-driven tools can transcribe and analyze clinical conversations in real-time, generating accurate and comprehensive patient records without the need for manual input. This not only reduces the burden on healthcare providers but also ensures that critical information is captured and utilized effectively. I saw several stand-alone solutions, like Eleos. But also saw EHR’s starting to integrate capabilities natively, such as NextGen.
  3. AI for outcomes: Additionally, AI-powered measurement-based solutions were highlighted as a promising approach to enhancing mental health assessment and monitoring. These solutions leverage AI algorithms to analyze patient data, identify patterns, and provide actionable insights that can guide treatment decisions. By continuously monitoring patient progress and adjusting interventions accordingly, these AI-powered tools have the potential to significantly improve treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Is the Mental Health Field Prepared for the Advancements of AI?

It was clear people were hungry for AI. However, while the potential benefits of AI in healthcare are vast, the conversations at the conference also underscored the importance of using AI safely and securely. As we integrate more AI solutions into our healthcare systems, it is crucial to prioritize data privacy, ethical considerations, and transparency to ensure that patient trust is maintained. Collaborative efforts between clinicians, technologists, and policymakers are essential to developing robust AI governance frameworks that protect patient rights while fostering innovation.

My attendance at the National Council on Mental Health and Wellness conference was a truly enlightening experience that highlighted the incredible potential of AI to augment decision-making, scale healthcare interactions, and improve patient care. As we continue to embrace these advancements, let us do so with a commitment to ethics, transparency, and inclusivity, ensuring that we harness the full potential of AI to create a brighter and healthier future for all.
